DVLA delays threaten Car Tax at Post Offices

In October, the DVLA failed to confirm that the Post Office will continue to be a portal for tax discs and driving licences. The institution - along with rival bidder and "internet payment service” Paypoint - must now wait until the end of November 2012 to see if it has won the ten year contract which is worth six-hundred million. This has, of course, had an unsettling effect on Post Office workers. Its Union is therefore asking motorists to support their bid by writing to, or e-mailing, Members of Parliament and putting-up campaign posters/postcards.

Mike Weir, Scottish National Party Member of Parliament for Angus, said: "I cannot remember a campaign like this - a really surprising amount of people feel strongly about this and I would hope the government and DVLA are watching.” Liberal Democrat Peer, Baroness Rosalind Scott, continued: "Post Offices hold things together and the danger is it's like a game of giant Jenga - you pull one block out and the whole thing falls down.”

George Thomson, General Secretary of the National Federation of SubPostmasters revealed: "The DVLA contract is essential to the future of our Post Offices. The ongoing delay in announcing a decision on the contract is having a highly unsettling effect on the national Post Office network and on individual subpostmasters ability to plan for the future.” He concluded: "Certainly, if the contract isn't awarded exclusively to the Post Office it would be catastrophic for the UK's Post Offices – thousands of branches may be forced to close.”

DVLA Campaign - Take action
Our post offices are the natural home for all forms of government work. It’s also clear that the network needs this new work if it is to be financially sustainable in the future. When we, together with our customers, make our voices heard we can persuade the government to act in the best interests of our network.
